MK60 ABS / Bleed guide

How to bleed an MK60 ABS unit after a swap

This is the bleed procedure for a Continental Teves MK60E5 ABS unit from a BMW E9x or E8x donor, whether it goes back into a BMW or into a Miata, MR2, Elise, Corvette or another standalone ABS swap. The timings and limits come from BMW's own INPA routine. I checked which valves each routine opens on my bench unit.

Why a normal bleed is not enough

A pressure or pedal bleed clears the lines and calipers. The MK60E5 also has outlet valves and a return pump circuit inside its hydraulic unit, and those stay shut unless the ABS module drives them. Air that got into the unit during the swap stays trapped there until a diagnostic tool tells the module to cycle its valves while you bleed.

That routine is what INPA, ISTA and some aftermarket scanners run, and what my browser tool runs.

What you need

  • A K+DCAN USB cable in D-CAN mode, connected to CAN high and low (OBD pins 6 and 14).
  • Terminal 30, the permanent battery feed to the pump and valves, plus ignition on terminal 15. A battery charger helps.
  • A pressure bleeder regulated to 1.0 bar (14.5 psi) or less.
  • At least 1 litre of fresh brake fluid, with the reservoir topped to MAX.
  • An assistant on the brake pedal. Do not use a pedal wedge.
  • A wrench, bleed hose and catch bottle, with all four bleed nipples reachable.

Fault codes that block the bleed

Fix these before you bleed. Clear the fault memory and read it again first, because old entries linger: a code that comes straight back is a real problem.

CodeMeaning and fix
5DF8Undervoltage on terminal 30. The pump and valves have no proper supply, and the module rejects every bleed command. I hit this on the bench. Fix the feed, clear and read again.
5DF0, 5DF1Pump motor fault, in the motor or its relay stage. Check the pump connector and supply first.
5E00End-of-line test mode is active. The unit is still in factory test mode and has to leave it before any service routine.

In a standalone swap you will also see faults about missing CAN messages from the engine, gearbox and gateway. Those are expected without the rest of the BMW and do not block the bleed.

Step by step

  1. Fill and bleed the lines

Bleed the lines and calipers the normal way first, so the routine only has to clear the ABS unit.

  2. Power and faults

Engine off, ignition on. Connect the cable, read the fault memory and clear it. Read it again and make sure none of the blocking codes above come back.

  3. Bleeder and assistant

Set the pressure bleeder to 1.0 bar at most and top the reservoir to MAX. Put your assistant in the driver's seat.

  4. Corner by corner

Go in this order: right rear, left rear, right front, left front. Open only the nipple of the corner you are bleeding.

  5. Two cycles per corner

Start the routine for that corner. Each cycle gives you about 15 seconds with the nipple open while your assistant works the pedal as the tool asks. Run 2 cycles, then close the nipple once the fluid runs clear without bubbles.

  6. Let it cool

The valve solenoids heat up. If a corner needs more than 2 retries, wait 90 seconds before you run it again.

  7. Finish and test

Top up the reservoir, clear the fault memory and check that the pedal is firm. Test the brakes at low speed somewhere safe before you drive normally.

Why only one nipple is open

The MK60E5 bleed routines work on pairs of wheels, not single wheels. One routine drives both front corners' valves, another both rear corners'. The wheel whose nipple is open is the one that bleeds, so open one nipple at a time and follow the order.

I confirmed the pairs by decoding the commands each routine sends to the valves on my bench unit, rather than guessing from the routine names.

Questions

What pressure should the bleeder be at?

1.0 bar (14.5 psi) or less. Higher pressure can damage the reservoir and push air past the seals.

Do I need INPA or ISTA?

They run the routine, but you need a Windows laptop with EDIABAS set up. Some aftermarket scanners run it too. My browser tool runs it from your browser with a K+DCAN cable and nothing to install. It is pre-release for now.

Does this work for the MK60E1 or the original MK60?

No. This guide is for the MK60E5. The original MK60, as in the E46, talks over K-line and uses different routines. Support for both is planned in my tool, not available yet.

Bleed it from your browser

I am building a browser tool that runs this whole procedure from your browser: it checks for blocking faults, walks you through the corners and enforces the timings and cool-downs.

Safety

Brakes are a safety system. Work on them only if you are competent to. Test the pedal and the brakes carefully before driving, and have the work checked if in doubt.
